When You Feel Pulled in Too Many Directions: Learning to Seek God First

Scripture

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

— Matthew 6:33, KJV

Opening

Some days a mother can feel as though everyone needs something from her at the same time. There are children to care for, meals to prepare, work to finish, messages to answer, household responsibilities to manage, and people who need her attention. Even when she finally sits down, her mind may still be thinking about everything that remains unfinished.

In the middle of all those responsibilities, time with God can easily become something that gets pushed to the side. You may tell yourself that you will pray when the house becomes quiet, read Scripture when the work is finished, or spend more time with God when the current season becomes easier.

But there will always be another responsibility. Another meal will need to be prepared, another problem will need attention, and another day will bring another list of things that need to be done.

Jesus gives us a different way to think about our priorities. He does not tell us that our responsibilities are unimportant. He teaches us that the kingdom of God must have first place in our lives, even while we faithfully carry the responsibilities He has given us.

Understand the Word

Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.” Jesus spoke these words while teaching His disciples about worry and the necessities of daily life. He was not pretending that food, clothing, work, or other physical needs were irrelevant. He was teaching His followers not to let anxiety about these things become the controlling pursuit of their lives.

To seek God's kingdom first means that God Himself becomes the highest priority. His rule, His righteousness, His will, and His glory are more important than simply getting through the day's responsibilities.

This does not mean a mother should neglect her children or abandon legitimate responsibilities in order to spend the entire day doing formal Bible study. Caring for children, working honestly, preparing food, managing a home, and serving others can all be acts of faithful obedience when they are done under God's authority.

The issue is not whether you have many responsibilities. The issue is what controls your heart while you carry them. A busy life can still be a God-centered life when your responsibilities are submitted to Him.

Christ and the Gospel

The Gospel reminds us that our standing before God does not depend upon how much we accomplish each day. A mother may finish everything on her list and still be a sinner in need of grace. She may accomplish very little on another day and still be fully dependent upon the mercy of God.

Our acceptance before God is not earned through perfect motherhood. Jesus Christ lived the righteous life we could never live and gave Himself on the cross for sinners. Those who trust in Him are accepted before God because of Christ, not because they managed their responsibilities perfectly.

This matters when motherhood feels overwhelming. You do not have to prove your worth through productivity. You do not have to accomplish everything before you are allowed to rest. You do not have to become the perfect mother before God will be pleased with you in Christ.

Seeking God first means beginning with the truth that you belong to Him. From that foundation, you can approach your responsibilities with humility, asking for wisdom rather than expecting yourself to control everything.

Living It Out

Give God your first attention, not merely your leftover attention. This may look different in every household. For one mother, it may mean reading Scripture before the children wake up. For another, it may mean praying while preparing breakfast or taking a few quiet minutes during a child's nap. The important thing is to intentionally make room for God rather than continually postponing Him.

Accept that you cannot do everything. Sometimes the feeling of being pulled in every direction comes from trying to carry responsibilities that God never required you to carry all at once. Ask what genuinely needs to be done today and what can wait. Wisdom includes recognizing your limitations.

Turn ordinary responsibilities into opportunities for dependence. You can pray while doing household work, ask God for patience while correcting your children, seek wisdom before an important conversation, and thank Him while preparing a meal. Your relationship with God does not have to exist separately from ordinary motherhood.

Guard your heart against comparison. Another mother may appear to manage her home, children, work, ministry, and spiritual life effortlessly. You cannot see everything happening behind someone else's public image. God has given you your particular responsibilities, and faithfulness is not measured by comparison with someone else's life.

Trust God with unfinished work. Some days will end with dishes still waiting, messages unanswered, laundry unfinished, or plans that did not happen. You are not God, and you were never meant to carry the entire world. Rest in the knowledge that God continues to work even when your own work remains incomplete.

Reflection

  1. What responsibilities currently make you feel pulled in too many directions?
  2. Has time with God become something you regularly postpone until everything else is finished?
  3. What practical change could help you seek God first while remaining faithful to your responsibilities?

Today's Takeaway

You do not need to accomplish everything before you can rest in God; seek His kingdom first and trust Him with the responsibilities you cannot control.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the responsibilities and people You have entrusted to me. You know how easily I can become overwhelmed when many things demand my attention at the same time. Forgive me for the times I become so focused on getting everything done that I forget to seek You.

Teach me to put You first without neglecting the responsibilities You have given me. Give me wisdom to know what truly needs my attention and humility to recognize what can wait. Help me not to measure my worth by how much I accomplish in a single day.

When I feel pulled in many directions, remind me that You are sovereign and that I am not. I cannot control everything that happens in my home, but I can trust You. Give me patience with my children, wisdom in my decisions, and grace to serve my family faithfully without allowing anxiety to rule my heart.

Thank You for Jesus Christ, whose righteousness is my hope. Thank You that my standing before You does not depend upon being a perfect mother or accomplishing every task. Help me live today from the confidence that I belong to You.

Teach me to seek Your kingdom first and trust You with everything else. May my home, my work, my motherhood, and even my unfinished tasks be placed under Your gracious care. In Jesus' name, Amen.
