Pastor John MacArthur Hospitalized with Pneumonia – A Call for Prayer

Sun Valley, CA (July 14, 2025) – Pastor John MacArthur, the long-serving leader of Grace Community Church and influential Bible teacher, has been hospitalized with pneumonia. At 86 years old, this development marks another serious challenge in his already fragile health condition.

During Grace Community Church’s Sunday service on July 13, Associate Pastor Tom Patton gave a heartfelt announcement, stating that MacArthur “may be in the presence of the Lord soon.” Congregants were visibly moved, and believers around the world are now being asked to join in prayer for MacArthur and his family.

Ongoing Health Challenges

MacArthur’s latest hospitalization follows a series of medical issues spanning two years:

  • January 2023: Diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, received cardiac stents and catheter treatment.
  • Mid-2024: Underwent multiple heart and lung surgeries, including an aortic valve replacement.
  • Late 2024 - Early 2025: Hospitalized for seven weeks, recovering from complications involving heart, lungs, and kidneys.
  • April 2025: Briefly returned to the pulpit, assuring followers he was improving.
  • June 2025: Required a second lung procedure and was advised to rest further.

Despite his resilience and unwavering faith, his body has endured much in recent years, and pneumonia now poses a serious threat, especially given his weakened heart, lungs, and kidneys.

A Global Legacy of Faith

John MacArthur has led Grace Community Church for over five decades, preaching verse-by-verse through the Bible and authoring more than 150 books. His commitment to biblical truth, even during times of cultural and political pressure, has made him a respected figure in evangelical and pastoral circles worldwide.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, MacArthur garnered national headlines for refusing to shut down in-person services, defending the church’s right to worship and setting a precedent for others.

A Call to Prayer and Support

Associate Pastor Patton called on the church to uphold MacArthur’s family in prayer: his wife Patricia, their four adult children, 15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

“Please pray that God would strengthen him,” Patton said, “and if it is his time to go home, that it would be peaceful and full of hope.”

John MacArthur: A Theological Tribute to a Life Poured Out for the Word John MacArthur (1939–2025): A Theological Tribute to a Life Poured Out for the Word On July 14, 2025, Pastor John Fullerton MacArthur Jr., aged 86, entered into the presence of the Lord. He leaves behind not only his beloved wife Patricia, their children and grandchildren, but also a global legacy of faithful expository preaching, uncompromising biblical conviction, and a church grounded in the sufficiency of Scripture. This is not merely a tribute to a man, but a reflection on a life shaped by the eternal Word of God. “I Have Fought the Good Fight” (2 Timothy 4:7–8) Paul’s words to Timothy find a fitting echo in John MacArthur’s life: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” For over five decades, MacArthur embodied these verses through unwavering dedication to biblical truth. His pulpit was not a platform for innovation but for illumi...
