When Your Children Begin to Drift from God

When Your Children Begin to Drift from God

Father praying in church for a child who has drifted from God

One Sunday morning, a father sat quietly in the church pew. Families were arriving, children were laughing, and worship was about to begin.

He glanced at the empty seat beside him.

It used to be filled by his son.

As the first song began, he silently prayed, "Lord... please bring my child back to You."

Many fathers carry this hidden burden. They remember teaching Bible stories, praying before bedtime, and bringing their children to church. Yet somewhere along the way, their son or daughter began to drift from the Lord.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
— Proverbs 22:6

God's Love Pursues Wandering Hearts

No father can change a child's heart, but God can. The same God who called you to Himself is able to pursue your son or daughter with perfect love and irresistible grace.

God never stops pursuing sinners.

His mercy reaches farther than we can see.

Do Not Carry False Guilt

Faithful parenting does not guarantee that every child will immediately walk with God. Children are responsible before God for their own response to the gospel. Continue examining your life honestly, but do not carry guilt that belongs only to God to judge.

Rest in God's sovereignty.

Remain faithful to His calling.

Never Stop Praying

Some of the greatest testimonies in church history began with parents who prayed faithfully for years. Your prayers are not wasted, even when answers seem delayed.

God hears every prayer.

His timing is always perfect.

Keep Living the Gospel

Your child still watches your life. Continue showing humility, repentance, forgiveness, and love. A life transformed by Christ remains a powerful testimony.

Live what you believe.

Your example still matters.

Practical Ways to Trust God

  • Pray specifically for your child every day.
  • Trust God's sovereign work in their heart.
  • Continue loving them with grace and truth.
  • Live consistently before them.
  • Hope in God's unfailing promises.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, You know the burden I carry for my child. I cannot change their heart, but You can. Help me trust Your perfect wisdom and continue praying without losing hope. Let my life reflect Christ, and according to Your mercy, draw my child to Yourself. In Jesus' name, Amen.
