Prayer – Communing with God

Introduction: What Is Prayer?
Prayer is the believer’s direct communication with God. It is an act of faith rooted in trust and reverence. Through prayer, we express our adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and petitions (Philippians 4:6).
Jesus modeled and taught prayer as an essential part of the Christian life (Matthew 6:5–13). True prayer flows from a heart regenerated by grace, desiring communion with the Father.
1. The Purpose of Prayer
“Pray without ceasing.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:17
Prayer is not about informing God but aligning ourselves with His will. It nurtures our relationship with Him, helps us grow spiritually, and deepens our dependence on His guidance.
2. How Jesus Taught Us to Pray
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…” – Matthew 6:9
Jesus gave the Lord’s Prayer as a model—not a mantra. It begins with worship and submission before requesting daily needs, forgiveness, and deliverance from evil. This structure shapes a God-centered life of prayer.
3. Praying According to God’s Will
“If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.” – 1 John 5:14
Prayer must be guided by Scripture and the Spirit. Faithful prayer seeks God's purposes, not merely personal desires (James 4:3). Trusting His sovereign wisdom, we submit to His answers—even when they differ from our own plans.

4. Hindrances to Effective Prayer
- Unconfessed sin – Psalm 66:18
- Wrong motives – James 4:3
- Lack of faith – James 1:6–7
- Broken relationships – Matthew 5:23–24
While God hears all prayers, effective prayer requires a clean heart and humble submission to His will.
5. The Power of Persistent Prayer
“And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night?” – Luke 18:7
God calls us to persistent, faithful prayer. This is not about nagging but about demonstrating faith and perseverance. The parable of the persistent widow encourages us to continue praying even when answers seem delayed.
Reflection and Application
- Am I consistent in prayer, or only praying during crisis?
- Is my heart aligned with God's purposes when I pray?
- Do I believe in the power of prayer to change me and glorify God?
