The Church – God’s Family

What Is the Church?
The word “church” comes from the Greek word ekklesia, which means “called out ones.” It refers not to a building, but to a group of people—those who have been called out by God to belong to Him and live in community with one another.
“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” – Ephesians 2:19
As believers, we are not spiritual orphans—we are part of a family: God’s family.
1. Christ Is the Head of the Church
“And he is the head of the body, the church.” – Colossians 1:18
The Church exists under the authority of Jesus Christ. He governs, guides, protects, and nourishes it. This spiritual body is united by the Holy Spirit and led by Christ, its Head.
2. The Church as the Body of Christ
Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12 that believers are all members of one body. Each person has a unique function and spiritual gift for the good of the whole:
- Diversity in unity – many parts, one body.
- Mutual care – if one suffers, all suffer.
- Service-oriented – every member is called to serve the others.
3. Functions of the Church
a. Worship
The primary function of the Church is to glorify God through worship in spirit and truth (John 4:24). Worship is both personal and corporate.
b. Fellowship
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.” – Acts 2:42
Fellowship builds unity, accountability, and spiritual strength. It's more than social interaction—it’s shared life in Christ.
c. Discipleship
The Church is commanded to teach and disciple (Matthew 28:19–20). This includes biblical teaching, mentoring, correction, and encouragement.
d. Evangelism
One of the church’s missions is to proclaim the Gospel to the world. It’s our spiritual mandate (Mark 16:15).
e. Ministry and Service
Believers are equipped to serve each other and meet physical, emotional, and spiritual needs (Galatians 6:2).

4. Marks of a True Church
- Sound Doctrine – faithful preaching of Scripture (2 Timothy 4:2)
- Right Administration of Ordinances – baptism and the Lord’s Supper
- Church Discipline – loving correction within the body (Matthew 18:15–17)
5. The Church Is God’s Eternal Plan
The Church is not man's invention—it is God's eternal purpose. Ephesians 3:10 says that through the church, God's wisdom is made known to the world and spiritual realms. Every believer plays a role in God's unfolding redemptive story.
Reflection
