The Gospel – The Good News of Salvation

Introduction: What Is the Gospel?
The word Gospel means “good news,” and in the context of Scripture, it is the best news ever given. But to fully appreciate the good news, we must first understand the bad news: mankind is spiritually dead, separated from God, and under judgment due to sin (Ephesians 2:1–3; Romans 3:23).
The Gospel proclaims that Jesus Christ lived the perfect life we could not live, died the death we deserved, and rose again to grant us life (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
1. The Gospel Was Promised by God
“…the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son…” – Romans 1:1–3
The Gospel was never an afterthought. God ordained it from eternity past. Through prophecies (Isaiah 53, Psalm 22) and covenants (Genesis 12), He foretold a coming Savior who would redeem mankind.
2. Christ’s Work Is the Center of the Gospel
“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God…” – 1 Peter 3:18
The Gospel is centered on Jesus Christ. He died as a substitute, bearing the wrath of God, to bring sinners into fellowship with the Father. His life, death, and resurrection are the pillars of salvation.
Exegesis: 1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Paul highlights:
- Died for our sins – Satisfying divine justice.
- Buried – Confirming His actual death.
- Raised – Demonstrating His victory over sin and death.
3. The Response to the Gospel: Repent and Believe
“Repent and believe in the gospel.” – Mark 1:15
Salvation demands a personal response: Repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ. This is not mere belief in facts, but trusting Christ with one’s life, enabled by the Spirit (John 3:5–8).
4. The Benefits of the Gospel
- Justification – Declared righteous (Romans 5:1)
- Reconciliation – Peace with God (Colossians 1:21–22)
- Adoption – Made children of God (Galatians 4:4–5)
- Eternal Life – Living hope through the resurrection (1 Peter 1:3–4)
5. The False Gospels: A Necessary Warning
The true Gospel is often replaced with distortions:
- Moralism – Teaching salvation by good works.
- Prosperity Gospel – Equating faith with material wealth.
- Universalism – Denying the need for repentance and Christ's atonement.
These must be rejected in favor of the Gospel that saves through grace alone, by faith alone, in Christ alone.
6. The Global Call of the Gospel
“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” – Mark 16:15
The Gospel is for all people. The church is called to be a witness to the nations, declaring Christ until He returns (Matthew 28:18–20).
